Speaker Ryan fulfilled his obligation to support the party’s nominee, but Mr. Trump has yet to inspire or earn loyalty. Blind loyalty is no virtue. Regardless of who wins the presidency, the U.S. needs a strong, conservative Congress to rein in abusive, big government, and Speaker Ryan is rising to the challenge. Hopefully, the Senate will follow suit.
Mr. Trump’s Twitter wars are undignified and petulant at best. The Washington Times quotes: “Paul Ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting Republican nominee,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter. The obvious hypocrisy is that Mr. Trump has little vision and few policy stances to achieve any of the said goals above, while Speaker Ryan and many other conservative Republicans have been working for years to reform the federal government back to its constitutional powers. During those years, Mr. Trump supported Democrats and big-government crony capitalism.
