Congress Returned Tuesday. Are You Ready?

August 31, 2016

Tuesday Congress returned to session, the final session of Pres. Obama’s era, and what is commonly referred to as a “lame duck” session.  What can we expect?

More spending?  Ineffective legislation?

Yes.

Some congressmen/women and senators are preparing significant legislation that conservatives and fans of limited government will want to track and support.  Heritage Action has highlighted key legislation:

  • “Taxpayers Before Insurers” – Protects policy holders and prevents bail outs for failed Obamacare insurers.  Co-sponsored by Sen. Ken Sasse (R-Neb.) and Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.).
  • “Marketplace Fairness Act” – Forces internet-based companies to pay sales tax for all fifty states.  Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump support this bill.  Free-market legislators oppose the internet sales tax.
  • “Draft Our Daughters Prohibition” – An amendment to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act.  Sponsored by Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Oh.) with support by Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.).
  • “First Amendment Defense Act” – Protects religious liberty and private property rights.  Co-sponsored by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho).

Sept. 30 is the end of fiscal year and Congress runs out of discretionary spending.  Is your House representative in favor of the continuing resolution or willing to look at each proposed appropriations bill for its own merit or lack of?  Stress to him or her the importance of passing an actual budget and stop relying on continuing resolutions.

Keep in touch with your congressional members. Hold them accountable.  Cheer them when they do well, and disagree with them when they don’t.  Communicate with them, and they will know better how to represent their constituents.
